Change.org is searching for an Engineering Manager or Technical Lead to create, scale and maintain a high performing team as both a hands-on contributor and leader of a small team.

Key Outcomes:

  • Create a team that is fully integrated into the organization, that embraces a growth mindset, continuous improvement and inclusion, where members have built strong relationships with department colleagues and stakeholders leading to mutual trust and respect
  • Drive the strategic planning and decision-making processes within their immediate team, providing insights and recommendations that drive innovation, efficiency, and long-term success.

  • Identify opportunities to improve development processes and workflows, implementing changes that streamline project achievement, enhance team productivity, and ensure adherence to best practices

The most important skills and capabilities for the role are:

Team building and management:

  • Build and manage an engineering team including definition of profiles, recruitment, onboarding, and retention of top talent.
  • Foster a high-performance, positive, inclusive team culture that promotes collaboration, creativity, and innovation while keeping a sustainable pace and high team morale
  • Ensure team is integrated into the organization such that members feel trusted, respected and have strong relationships with other colleagues
  • Provide regular feedback and performance evaluations, identify opportunities for skill development, create career growth plan, and support the professional advancement of team members.

Coding skills:

  • Full stack with experience working effectively at scale
  • Expertise with different technologies, languages and frameworks in all layers of the webstack, from frontend to backend with an emphasis on Nodejs, Ruby on Rails, Elixir, React, Javascript/Typescript, GraphQL
  • Experience with SQL-based databases, able to define and optimize data schemas
  • Experience with infrastructure as code technologies like Terraform, Kubernetes, AWS

Planning & Execution:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for technical initiatives that align with business objectives
  • Collaborate with product and design to set clear quarterly objectives and discover tactics that lead the team to achieving their goals
  • Scope projects and deconstruct into a well-defined action plan with timelines, be accountable for driving execution
  • Deliver user-facing software iteratively: by first building an MVP, and only scaling once we validate using experimentation and user data

Architecture & Design, Performance:

  • Identify and drive architectural improvements to set standards for system quality and reliability that support long-term business goals and drive technical excellence
  • Identify opportunities and drive implementation of solutions that enhance system performance and reliability
  • Be a driver for system quality

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Proactively communicate with stakeholders, including executives, product managers, and cross-functional teams, to align technical initiatives with business objectives and priorities
  • Partner and collaborate effectively across functions such as product, design, devops, QA, analytics and with colleagues located in different timezones
  • Advocate for the engineering team’s needs and priorities, representing their interests in decision-making processes and strategic discussions
  • Lead by example in fostering an open, inclusive and transparent culture

Target experience:

  • 3 years of direct management experience
  • 4-6 years of experience with full stack web service development
  • 3 years of experience in at least one language that we use at Change: Nodejs, Rails, Elixir
  • 3 years of experience in frontend technologies like React/JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Experience with infrastructure as code technologies like Terraform, Kubernetes, AWS
  • Experience developing data access layers using RESTful APIs and GraphQL
  • English fluency (Minimum B2)

This is a remote role available in two different formats: either a full-time employee paid MX$129,000/month gross and hired through a third-party local entity, or as a contractor paid MX$167,750/month gross. The benefits available, and structures of the roles, are different. We’re happy to go over the details in our first call.

Our compensation philosophy is based on pay equity. All of our salaries are determined before we launch a role – they are based on a predetermined salary scale, the level on that scale and the cost of labor for that location. 

Our evaluation process is as follows:

  • 30 min Recruiter screen
  • 60 min interview with our VP of Engineering & Mexico Site Lead
  • 3 hours of team interviews, including a live coding session
  • 30 min interview with our CTO
