Position Overview
The Mozilla Foundation is a nonprofit public benefit organization. Our mission is to ensure that the Internet is a global public resource, open and accessible to all. We are seeking a US Senior Program Officer for a period of 1 year as parental leave cover to join our Fellowships and Awards (F&A) team. A key component of our strategy is to invest in the innovators at the frontlines of working to make the internet more open, inclusive, decentralized, and secure. Through fellowships and awards, we support these leaders and amplify their important work on issues impacting the health of the internet. Our team leads a grantmaking strategy providing funding and resources to partners in the movement for a healthier internet. Over the past year, we have gone through an extensive reflection process and developed an emerging grantmaking strategy to increase our impact.
As US Senior Program Officer, you will design and implement a cohort of individuals and organisations in the US tackling bias in AI systems to support our work on Trustworthy AI issues around transparency, bias and data stewardship. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your expertise in community building and use technology and social justice to strengthen a growing ecosystem of US leaders solving bias in AI. You will also provide support for our Tech and Society Fellowship program and give your insight into future program planning.
As a Senior Program Officer, you will…
Scope of Work:
- Program Strategy and Design: Work closely with the F&A team and other partners to brainstorm, co-design and deliver a US program that pairs technologists and organisers to catalyse social justice movement work.
- Cohort Development: Seek out, vet, and support collaborative cohorts of individuals and organisations tackling bias in AI systems in the US. You will also build shared learning opportunities by connecting cohort members to one another, more broadly across Mozilla, and within the wider community.
- Program Oversight: Work with Mozilla teams to implement a grantmaking and accompaniment strategy for the US cohort that will allow grantees to have maximum impact. This includes managing grants, tracking progress, and serving as a thought partner and advisor to funded projects.
- Support the development of an outreach and communications strategy for our US work. This includes supporting the design of convenings and external events.
- Tech and Society Fellowship: Support the offboarding of four embedded Tech and Society fellows and their organisations in Mexico and Brazil and participate in designing future iterations of the fellowship program.
External Engagement:
- Field Development: Serve as a forward-thinking leader in the conversation about funding social justice work at the intersection of AI and bias, giving findings from the program back to the field at large.
- Network Engagement: Collaborating with Mozilla employees, support knowledge sharing with movement partners, funders, and in external events.
Internal:
- Work collaboratively with Mozilla’s Marketing and Communications team to tell the story of our work with partners around bias and transparency of AI systems impacting social justice movements . This may include: through (a) community calls, (b) internal convenings (c) blogs and press articles.
- Foster integration of fellows and awardees into other initiatives at Mozilla, such as MozFest, Advocacy and the Internet Health Report by facilitating interactions with relevant internal partners.
- Support monitoring and evaluation of specific work across the F&A team to understand impact and adjust programming.
- Lead all aspects of several small community community grants, with the potential to identify other small grants.
Your Professional Profile:
The ideal candidate will be passionate about advancing social justice movements in the US and be excited by the opportunity to build a cohort of technical fellows to enable a group of social justice organisations. You will have issue area knowledge that will allow you to work with AI experts and organizers to strengthen social justice movement work. You will support your colleagues across the team and our programs by providing insight based on your own expertise as it relates to internet freedom, internet health, and/or the technologies upon which these are built.
The person in the role will collaborate across the organization to connect our work internally, and with external movement partners on activities related to our Trustworthy AI goals. You will help craft our strategy and grow our community across issue areas and geographies during an exciting period of growth for Mozilla. You will report to the Director, F&A Program.

Skills & Experience:
- At least 7 years of relevant job experience with strong technical and communications knowledge.
- Experience leading complex, technology and society focused grant programs in the US.
- Proven expertise as a communicator and ability to interpret and assess nuanced power dynamics within the field.
- Experience building relationships across networks/movements and mentoring individuals and organisations.
- Curiosity for learning about areas of importance to Mozilla and our communities.
- Multi-level partner management.
- Someone who is a connector and a problem solver.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in cross-functional, distributed teams.
- Experience navigating across large organisations to build support for programs and initiatives.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse individuals.
- Experience as a fellow, working with fellowship programs, or grantmaking preferred.
Salary & Benefits information:
The Mozilla Foundation is dedicated to fair and equitable compensation for our staff. We aim to pay a competitive and market-based salary based on the responsibilities and requirements of the role. We aim to offer at the midpoint of our salary ranges for the purposes of increasing inclusivity and fairness of our offer process and ensuring internal equity. We do not ask for, or take into account, salary histories in our offer process.
The base salary ranges, and the mid-point, for this role is listed below. We target the 75th percentile of market pay as a salary band midpoint for all levels, with 10% either side of the midpoint to create a salary range.These four countries are where we most commonly employ staff.
- Germany: €87,855 – €107,378 (mid-point: €97,616)
- UK: £54,894 – £67,093 (mid-point: £60,994)
- Canada: $99,518 – $121,633 (mid-point: $110,575)
- US: $101,104 – $123,572 (mid-point: $112,338)
We may also add in a geographic differential to this base salary based on the local job market. This would be applied to the above ranges depending on the successful candidate’s location. Below are some of the common cities in which we hire staff along with examples of salary ranges,with the geographical differential applied:
- Inner London: £59,834 – £73,131 (mid-point: £66,483)
- Toronto: $107,379 – $131,241 (mid-point: $119,310)
- New York: $112,023 – $136,917 (mid-point: $124,470)
