ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Director of Philanthropy (DoP) is responsible for directing all aspects of fundraising to secure significant financial resources to support organizational goals. Fundraising functions include individual giving, foundation relations and corporate philanthropy, in Canada and globally. They are responsible for leading a dynamic team based in Canada and the US, enabling their success and career development. As a member of Nature United’s Leadership Team, they are responsible for ensuring programmatic work is collaborative and well-integrated within philanthropy and across the organization. As Nature United scales its fundraising efforts and programmatic delivery, the DoP must be able to co-develop and communicate a broad vision and inspire others, internally and externally.

The DoP will work towards meeting the priorities of the philanthropy program by conceiving, developing and managing plans and strategies. They will establish and monitor activity level benchmarks and measures of success. The DoP facilitates strategic dialogues with clients and senior-level stakeholders, probing to identify key issues and requirements, negotiating and developing solutions, and synthesizing a plan of action tailored to audiences. They will direct diverse activities, develop complex practices and processes, project outcomes, and initiate changes in order to improve effectiveness. They manage relationships and work closely with key stakeholders including senior management, internal teams, vendors, donors, and volunteers to achieve program goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Responsible for developing and executing the sustainable fundraising strategy that supports organizational goals and objectives, in collaboration with other departments, senior staff and the Board of Directors.
  • Accountable for fundraising goals of $10 million annually and for various special projects as required.
  • Management of a select portfolio of strategic donors and volunteers.
  • Broad management responsibility for philanthropy department including recruitment, retaining, professional development, establishing clear directions, and setting stretch objectives.
  • Lead strategic initiatives through collaboration with senior-level stakeholders to enhance overall performance in accordance with short and long-term objectives.
  • Design and direct complex and diversified fundraising projects, coordinating the work of other professionals, and managing budget, while ensuring program accountability and developing corrective strategies as needed.
  • Create innovative and high-level strategies and proposals using a collaborative approach.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Communications to develop/advance strategies for engaging new fundraising audiences, broadening our organizational reach and making a compelling case to expand unrestricting giving.
  • Act independently, exercise judgment to identify and solve problems.
  • Make decisions that have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally.
  • Ensure compliance with Nature United policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information.
  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout Canada and globally to support fundraising efforts.
  • Travel frequently and on short notice, work long and flexible hours as needed.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years related experience, including experience working at a senior level, or equivalent combination.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major and principal gift donors, foundations and corporations, and senior volunteers.
  • Experience in asking for and closing 7-figure gifts.
  • Experience in developing strategic and annual plans, and delivering against objectives and budgetary responsibilities.
  • Experience leading, developing and managing a diverse and high-performing team.
  • Experience on senior leadership team and making organization-wide strategy and resourcing decisions.
  • Eagerness to participate in cultural competency training and advancing right relations with Indigenous Peoples.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years related experience, including experience working at a senior level, or equivalent combination.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major and principal gift donors, foundations and corporations, and senior volunteers.
  • Experience in asking for and closing 7-figure gifts.
  • Experience in developing strategic and annual plans, and delivering against objectives and budgetary responsibilities.
  • Experience leading, developing and managing a diverse and high-performing team.
  • Experience on senior leadership team and making organization-wide strategy and resourcing decisions.
  • Eagerness to participate in cultural competency training and advancing right relations with Indigenous Peoples.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi/cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Advanced understanding of best practices in fundraising and non-profit management, current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation.
  • Experience fundraising in areas related to the environment and/or climate change an asset.
  • Experience designing and implementing fundraising campaigns an asset.
  • Effectively communicate via presentations, conversations, and documents.
  • Experience managing a geographically dispersed team.
